New model species for arctic‐alpine plant molecular ecology

چکیده

Arctic and alpine, high latitude elevation environments are one of the most stressful for species to inhabit. This harshness manifests itself in lower richness comparison more southern vegetation zones (Francis & Currie, 2003). Furthermore, climatic oscillations—past predicted—have dramatic effect on these ecosystems. For example, regions continental ice sheets—the northernmost part Western Europe North America—the assemblages no older than a few thousands years, which is relatively short period from an evolutionary perspective. Although similar may have existed further south during Ice Age, allowing some preadaptation species, current habitat unique combination environmental factors such as climate, soil, bedrock, photoperiod. Hence, understanding forces shaping Arctic-alpine will be important predicting vulnerable environments’ population viability adaptive potential future. In this issue Molecular Ecology Resources, Nowak et al. (Molecular Resources) present extensive genome-wide resources plant Draba nivalis. adds valuable new member into cabbage family models genetics adaptation studies, accompany e.g., Arabidopsis (Nature Genetics, 43, 476; Nature, 408, 796), Arabis Plants, 1, 14023) Capsella 45, 831). A whole avenue open up molecular ecological studies not only D. nivalis, but large genus with its diverse characteristics.

Growth-size scaling relationships of woody plant species differ from predictions of the Metabolic Ecology Model.

The Metabolic Ecology Model predicts that tree diameter (D) growth (dD/dt) scales with D(1/3). Using data on diameter growth and height-diameter relationships for 56 and 40 woody species, respectively, from forests throughout New Zealand, we tested one prediction and two assumptions of this model: (i) the exponent of the growth-diameter scaling relationship equals 1/3 and is invariant among spe...

Analytically tractable model for community ecology with many species.

A fundamental problem in community ecology is understanding how ecological processes such as selection, drift, and immigration give rise to observed patterns in species composition and diversity. Here, we analyze a recently introduced, analytically tractable, presence-absence (PA) model for community assembly, and we use it to ask how ecological traits such as the strength of competition, the a...

Melding ecology, classical weed biocontrol, and plant microbial ecology can inform improved practices in controlling invasive plant species

Early research leading to the successful biological control of invasive species such as Opuntia spp., and Hypericum perforatum set examples and provided data useful for research programs that would follow. However, this early work failed to become established as a source of applicable principles for later workers in weed biocontrol. Recently, retrospective and parallel studies have been suggest...

Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria: a model for molecular microbial ecology.

The eutrophication of many ecosystems in recent decades has led to an increased interest in the ecology of nitrogen transformation. Chemolitho-autotrophic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria are responsible for the rate-limiting step of nitrification in a wide variety of environments, making them important in the global cycling of nitrogen. These organisms are unique in their ability to use the conversi...
